Mirabel-aux-Baronnies is a village in the Baronnies (Drôme), between Nyons and Vaison-la-Romaine. Surrounded by AOP Nyons olives, vineyards and lavender: a warm, rural base in the Drôme Provençale.
Among the rolling hills of the Drôme Provençale, nestled between Nyons and Vaison-la-Romaine lies the picturesque village of Mirabel-aux-Baronnies.
Mirabel-aux-Baronnies has a long history going back to Roman times. Its strategic location between the Rhône valley and Mont Ventoux made it an important route. In the Middle Ages the village was a fortified settlement, and traces of this can still be seen in the narrow streets, old town walls and historic buildings. At the top of the village are a few remains of the medieval castle. Although the castle has largely disappeared, the ruins give a good idea of how this stronghold once watched over the region.
Vaison-la-Romaine (10 km): one of the most important archaeological sites in France, with impressive Roman ruins, a medieval upper town and a lively Provençal market.
Nyons (7 km): this charming little town is known for its Tanche olives, the historic Pont Roman (14th century) and the Olive Museum. The weekly market is a treat for food lovers.
Grignan (30 km): this fairy-tale village is known for the beautiful Château de Grignan, once the home of Madame de Sévigné. In summer, theatre and music performances are held at the castle.
Séguret (20 km): this picturesque village is officially one of the Plus Beaux Villages de France. Stroll along the cobbled streets and enjoy breathtaking views over the Rhône valley.
Mont Ventoux (30 km): the legendary mountain of the Tour de France! For cyclists and walkers it is one of the finest challenges in the region. The views from the top are spectacular.
Les Baronnies Provençales: this natural area offers a beautiful landscape of limestone rocks, fragrant lavender fields and winding streams. Perfect for walking and cycling.
The Gorges du Toulourenc (25 km): a breathtaking gorge where you can walk through the shallow water, surrounded by steep cliffs and beautiful nature. A lovely place to cool off in summer!
