Travelling to the south of France by electric car
Date
Bienvenue en France!
For Belgian and Dutch travellers, France is not only the favourite holiday destination but also an essential transit country on the way to Spain or Italy. Remarkably, France has made considerable progress in electrification. In May of this year the country reached the milestone of 100,000 public charging points, with impressive growth of 4,000 new ones a month. That puts France in second place in Europe for the availability of public charging points.
If you head south via Luxembourg, you will pass the same Luxembourg service areas (Aire de Capellen and Aire de Berchem), which currently have only six charging points.
A useful tip: consider making your first charging stop at the Tesla Superchargers in Arlon. Although it means a short detour off the motorway, this charging park is so large that you will probably be able to charge without any trouble. Remember to install the Tesla app beforehand for a smooth charging experience.
Tips for the road
1. Fast charging at Tesla Superchargers? Download the Tesla app!
Did you know that you can fast-charge at many Tesla Superchargers, even without a Tesla? With the largest fast-charging network in Europe, Tesla offers reliable chargers and charging bays that are almost always available. Download the Tesla app for useful information about charging stations and live availability.
2. Allow for a shorter range
Factors such as speed, weather, terrain, air conditioning and luggage weight all play a part. In mountainous areas consumption can vary, so adjust your expectations to the driving conditions.
3. Use cruise control and eco mode
Optimise your energy use by switching on cruise control and eco mode. That way you drive in a relaxed way at a constant speed and keep power consumption to a minimum.
4. Don't drive too fast
Bear in mind that higher speeds mean a shorter range. Driving at 130 km/h instead of 100 km/h can increase consumption by 30 to 45%. Plan your trip and reduce the need to stop often to charge.
5. Check charger availability along the way
Check how busy charging stops are via your satnav, your charging card app or Google Maps. Let your passenger do this so you can stay relaxed behind the wheel. Abroad, rapid chargers are often signposted on the road.
6. Don't leave charging until the last minute
Keep at least 10% battery to avoid stress. If possible, top up when you still have 40% to 30% left, so you can keep moving quickly.
7. Charge to 80% on a rapid charger
Avoid charging above 80% for long on a rapid charger, as the charging speed drops sharply and it is not good for the battery.
8. Check which cables you need
Most countries use the 'standard' Type 2 cables, but in countries such as France and Italy you sometimes need Type 3C plugs.
9. Check Bison Futé for live traffic and charging information
A smart move for travellers is to check Bison Futé, the French traffic information service. There you will find not only real-time traffic advice but also an interactive map showing the locations of working charging points for electric vehicles.
10. Enjoy the drive and make memories!
As you drive through the sunny south of France with your electric companion, remember: the journey matters as much as the destination. Take the time to enjoy the beautiful scenery, discover hidden gems along the way and make unforgettable memories with your travel companions. Travelling electric may take a little more planning, but the extra stops are also the perfect chance to relax and have some fun and adventure.
So charge up, cruise through the French charm and let the positive energy of your electric trip light the way. Bon voyage et profitez-en bien! 🚗💨✨
