Nobility and history united
The picturesque village of Grignan has a rich history going back to the Iron Age. Even the Romans left their mark here. The Château de Grignan, sitting majestically on a hilltop, plays a prominent role in the village's history. The castle was originally built in the 12th century but had to be adapted in the 16th century because of technological developments such as the invention of gunpowder.

The Château de Grignan
During the French Revolution the castle was abandoned and its furniture sold. It fell into disrepair and was in danger of becoming a ruin. Fortunately, in 1838 it was bought by Léopold Faure, a local resident, who began the first restoration work. It was not until 1913 to 1931, however, that large-scale restoration took place, thanks to the efforts of Marie Fontaine, the owner at the time, who was determined to restore the castle's historic value.
In 1979 the castle was bought by the public authorities, and since 1993 it has been officially recognised as a historic monument. Today the Château de Grignan is open to the public, giving visitors the chance to discover the beautiful architecture, lavish interiors and rich history of this impressive castle. It is a must-visit for lovers of history and architecture and a real treat for the senses.
