Séguret: a medieval village to taste and admire
Date
Nestled at the foot of the Dentelles de Montmirail in the heart of Provence lies Séguret. This charming medieval village is on the official list of Les Plus Beaux Villages de France (the most beautiful villages of France). A visit to Séguret is a journey back in time, surrounded by history, culture and the warm colours of Provence.
Car-free and authentic
Séguret is largely car-free, which means only residents may drive into the village. Visitors park in a large car park just outside the village and enter Séguret on foot, which adds to the peace and the authentic atmosphere. As soon as you walk into the village, you are welcomed by the Fontaine des Mascarons, an elegant 16th-century fountain. This finely carved work has three masks that act as water spouts and is one of the village's first historical highlights.
A walk through history
Wandering through Séguret's cobbled lanes, you discover beautiful old houses, glimpses of the vineyards and charming little boutiques. In summer the streets are full of flowering plants and blooms, giving the village a picture-postcard look. Local artists and craftspeople sell their work here, from handmade jewellery to Provençal ceramics and regional specialities.
A picturesque climb takes you up to the Église Saint-Denis, a historic church with Romanesque and Gothic features. From here you have a magnificent view of the surrounding area. Unfortunately the church is not always open to the public, but its serene atmosphere and setting make the walk more than worthwhile.
The view
Next to the church lie the ruins of an old castle, a reminder of the strategic position Séguret once held. Here you will also find a viewpoint indicator that helps you identify the surrounding villages and mountains. The view from this spot is simply spectacular, with vineyards stretching to the horizon and a panoramic view of Mont Ventoux and the Rhône Valley.
Dining in Séguret
As well as history and wine, Séguret has a few atmospheric restaurants where you can enjoy Provençal cuisine. Whether you fancy a full gastronomic meal or a simple, tasty lunch with local produce, there is something for everyone. Many restaurants have terraces with a beautiful view over the vineyards, which makes the dining experience even more special.
