Villeneuve-lès-Avignon surprises
Date
Villeneuve-lès-Avignon is a historic small town in the Gard department in the south of France, set on the right bank of the Rhône opposite the city of Avignon. It is known for its rich history, its charming old town and its spectacular views of Avignon and Provence.
Around the year 1000, Benedictine monks built the Abbey of Saint-André on Mont Andaon. The abbey grew into an important spiritual centre and was later surrounded by the town of Saint-André, which became a fort and military outpost. Under King Philippe le Bel (Philip the Fair), who wanted to gain control of the Rhône, the area became a strategic link between Avignon and the Gard.
The imposing Fort Saint-André, which towers over the village, is an impressive example of medieval military architecture. Dating from the 14th century, the fort offered protection and control over the Rhône Valley. Today you can visit both the fort and the abbey and enjoy their beautiful gardens with centuries-old olive trees, pines and Mediterranean plants. The view from this historic spot is simply breathtaking.
The Tour Philippe-le-Bel and the view over the City of the Popes
The Tour Philippe-le-Bel, built in 1307, is an impressive watchtower that served as a strategic checkpoint over the Rhône. It once marked the entrance to Avignon's famous bridge, the Pont Saint-Bénézet. Today it is one of the best viewpoints in the region.
Climb the 176 steps and you are rewarded with a panoramic view over Villeneuve-lès-Avignon, the Rhône and the historic city of Avignon, also known as the "City of the Popes". It is the perfect spot to admire the beauty of Provence from a different perspective.
The Musée Pierre-de-Luxembourg
Art lovers should not miss a visit to the Musée Pierre-de-Luxembourg. Housed in a beautiful 14th-century mansion, the museum holds works of art from the abbey and the charterhouse, as well as paintings from the French and Provençal schools of the 16th and 17th centuries. It is a unique chance to discover the region's artistic heritage.
The town has something for everyone. Every Thursday morning there is a friendly market where you can taste and buy local produce. On Saturday mornings it gets even livelier, with an organic market and a flea market. Here you not only taste the flavours of Provence, you also soak up the lively atmosphere of Villeneuve-lès-Avignon.
