Castellane is a commune in the Alpes-de-Haute-Provence département in France. It is the sub-prefecture of the arrondissement of Castellane. The town lies on the Verdon, not far from the Gorges du Verdon.

Castellane has a rich history going back to Roman times. In the Middle Ages Castellane was an important trading place and an important stop for pilgrims on their way to Rome.

The small town has a well-preserved medieval centre with narrow streets, picturesque little squares and some fine buildings, including the church of Saint-Martin, the Château de Castellane and the chapel of Saint-Pierre.

  • Castellane lies on the Route Napoléon, the route Napoleon Bonaparte took in 1815 when he returned from exile to Paris.
  • The well-known wine AOC Côtes de Provence Castellane is produced in Castellane.

  • Gorges du Verdon (15 km): one of the most famous gorges in Europe. The gorge is 25 kilometres long and up to 700 metres deep. There are countless walking routes and viewpoints.
  • Moustiers-Sainte-Marie (25 km): a beautiful medieval village built on a cliff. The village is on the UNESCO World Heritage list.
  • La Palud-sur-Verdon (20 km): a small village on the shores of the Lac de Sainte-Croix. It is a popular destination for water sports.
