More about Céreste-en-Luberon

Céreste-en-Luberon lies in the west of the Alpes-de-Haute-Provence, on the border with the Vaucluse, between the Pays d'Apt and the Pays de Forcalquier. Until 1 January 2024 the commune was simply called Céreste. The village sits at the foot of the Grand Luberon foothills, on the route of the old Roman Via Domitia. In the historic centre you wander through steep lanes between stone houses and little squares with fountains. On the Place des Marronniers stands the oldest fountain in the village, from the 19th century. You will also find remains of the old walls, the Porte Notre-Dame and a medieval house with a round-arched door, one of the oldest in the village. The église Saint-Michel was built in the 18th century. During the Second World War the poet and Resistance fighter René Char found refuge here. Just outside the village, halfway to Reillanne, the Prieuré de Carluc reveals the remains of a medieval monastery set against a cliff, with rock-cut tombs among ancient oaks. Every Thursday morning the market fills the Place du Général de Gaulle with local produce and, in summer, craftspeople. Céreste-en-Luberon is also a great base for walks in the Parc naturel régional du Luberon.
