Do you recognise those familiar lines from the back seat? "Are we nearly there yet? I'm bored..." Yep, those are the signs of boredom on that long car journey to your holiday. Children just don't enjoy sitting still. But don't panic! We have the perfect cure for boredom: fun car games that keep not only the children but you too entertained during the journey.
Meet 10 surprisingly fun car games. Laughter and relaxation for the whole family!
1. Car bingo for smiling faces!
"Bingo!" rings out from the back seat as soon as every square on the card has been ticked off. Car bingo is the ultimate game for a cheerful family drive. Each bingo card shows things you come across along the way. As soon as you spot something on your card, it is time to tick it off. Who will find them all first?
2. I went on a trip and I packed
A classic among car games: 'I Went on a Trip and I Packed'. Start the round with "I went on a trip and I packed..." and add an item. The next person repeats the sentence, names the first item and adds a new one of their own. The more items, the funnier it gets!
3. No yes, no no, no er
In this car game you are not allowed to say 'yes', 'no' or 'er'. The challenge? Ask questions the other person will want to answer straight away with yes or no. Holding a conversation without these words becomes an art. Just try having a conversation without them. Whoever lasts the longest wins.
4. Number plate sentences
Let the children sharpen their reading skills with the 'Make Sentences or Words from Number Plates' game. If they can read on their own, the drive becomes a real adventure! Choose a number plate together, for example 1-JBG-265, and let the creativity flow. How quickly can they come up with a funny sentence using the letters on the plate?
5. Car window creations
Did you know that whiteboard markers wipe off car windows with no effort at all? Test it at home first, before you find yourself staring at a car window covered in artwork...
Here's how it works: think of an object or animal and try to draw it on the car window. Take your time and let the others guess while you draw.
6. Word chain
Rediscover the classic 'Word Chain' for a dose of creative word fun! Start with a word, then form a new word beginning with the last letter of that word. Give the game a twist by adding a theme: play with animals, countries, maybe even colours! Whoever runs out of answers loses the game.
7. I spy with my little eye
Choose an object everyone can see, say its colour, and let the rest of the car guess what it is. Simple, right? A fun way to brighten up the journey!
8. Musical challenge: stop and sing!
Put on a cheerful song and sing along at the top of your voice. But here comes the twist: suddenly turn the volume down to 0 and keep singing. Can you stay in tune when the music comes back on? Guaranteed fun and laughter!
9. Imagining together
Dive into the world of imagination with the 'Story Chain' game! Player 1 starts with the magic words "Once upon a time...", then player 2 adds a sentence and player 3 adds another one after that. Together you create a unique story. The possibilities are endless, and it can be short or delightfully long.
10. Who am I?
'Guess the Person'! One player thinks of a famous person and the others ask yes/no questions to work out who it is. Is it a film star? A politician? A superhero? Fun and curiosity guaranteed!
