The creative heart of Lacoste
Date
In the heart of the Luberon, high on a ridge and surrounded by lavender fields and vineyards, lies the village of Lacoste. Just 6 km from Bonnieux, 14 km from Gordes and 16 km from Apt, this village full of character is not only ideally located but also one of the most beautiful hilltop villages in the region. From its old lanes and terraces, a breathtaking view unfolds over the valley, and on clear days you can see all the way to the imposing Mont Ventoux.
Lacoste breathes history. The village grew up around the Château de Lacoste, once owned by the notorious Marquis de Sade. His presence left a lasting mark, and his name is still linked to the village today.
In the 2000s, the château was bought by fashion designer Pierre Cardin, who had it partly restored and turned it into a cultural meeting place with open-air performances and festivals.
A walk through Lacoste feels like travelling back in time. The cobbled lanes wind past houses of honey-coloured stone, old gateways, hidden gardens and charming artists' studios.
Creative energy in a centuries-old setting
What makes Lacoste extra special is its contemporary artistic side. Thanks to the presence of the Savannah College of Art and Design (SCAD), the village comes alive all year round with students from all over the world.
Their art projects and temporary exhibitions bring a surprising, modern touch to the centuries-old setting. Here, art and heritage go hand in hand.
A place to slow down and enjoy
Lacoste is small but big on character. You will find a few lovely restaurants and terraces where you can enjoy local specialities with a glass of chilled rosé while looking out over the valley.
Thanks to its central location, it is also an ideal base for exploring the Luberon. Walk to Bonnieux, visit the colourful ochre cliffs of Roussillon or explore Apt, known for its market and local produce.
