A regional park with character

For many people, the Luberon is what Provence looks like. The Parc naturel régional du Luberon was created in 1977 and stretches across the Vaucluse and the Alpes-de-Haute-Provence. It has been a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve since 1997 and a UNESCO Global Geopark since 2015. At its heart rises the limestone Luberon massif, reaching 1,125 metres, surrounded by vineyards, olive groves, oak woods and lavender.

Villages that stay with you

Gordes, Roussillon, Ménerbes and Lourmarin are all listed among Les Plus Beaux Villages de France. Gordes sits high on its rock, looking out over the valley. In Roussillon, the Sentier des Ocres winds between red and yellow ochre cliffs whose colours shift with the seasons. Just outside Gordes, Sénanque Abbey is usually at its most beautiful when the lavender flowers, roughly from 20 June to 10 July. Go early in the morning, before the heat and the crowds.

Markets and the rhythm of Provence

In the Luberon, the markets set the pace of the week. On Saturday mornings the Apt market, which the town itself calls a marché d'exception, is not to be missed. On Friday mornings it is market day in Lourmarin and Bonnieux. Expect seasonal vegetables, cheese, olive oil, wine and lavender, and take your time over a coffee on a terrace afterwards.
