The name Lagnes is said to come from the Latin "lanio", which referred to wool and sheep, a nod to the village's farming origins and the early economic activity in the region.
The village is dominated by a 13th-century castlethat once served as a fortified stronghold. Over the centuries the castle has been altered and extended several times. Today it is private property, but you can still admire it from the outside, especially from the surrounding streets and viewpoints in the village. The medieval atmosphere lives on in the cobbled lanes, old houses and panoramic views over the valley.
The river Sorgue rises nearby in Fontaine-de-Vaucluse and flows on to L'Isle-sur-la-Sorgue and beyond. Several rental companies such as Kayak Vert or Canoë Evasion offer routes that let you glide along calm stretches of water from the source or from L'Isle-sur-la-Sorgue. The water is clear and the surroundings green, which makes it ideal for families and active days outdoors.
