Rustrel is a quiet village in the Vaucluse, at around 400 metres between the Luberon and the Monts de Vaucluse, about 10 kilometres from Apt. Just outside the village, the Colorado provençal invites you to walk through former ochre quarries.
Rustrel sits in the Vaucluse (Provence-Alpes-Côte d'Azur), about 10 kilometres north-east of Apt, within the Parc naturel régional du Luberon. At around 400 metres, the village looks out over the Apt basin, with the Monts de Vaucluse behind it and the Doa valley below. Its best-known site is the Colorado provençal: former ochre quarries in shades from yellow to deep red, now a protected landscape explored on waymarked trails of 2 to 4 kilometres. Admission is charged and includes parking. In the village, the promenade de l'eau links the Romanesque church, the 17th-century château that now houses the town hall, and an 18th-century oil mill that opens in summer. Higher up, the Sentier de la Baume de Midi leads to a viewpoint over the ochres. Apt, Saint-Saturnin-lès-Apt and Roussillon are close by. A peaceful base for exploring the Luberon and ochre country.
