Althen-des-Paluds is a relatively young Comtat village in the Vaucluse (a commune since 1845), named after Jean Althen and the old paluds (marshes) along the Sorgue. Plain country between Carpentras and Avignon: a warm, practical base near the Ventoux and the Sorgues.
Althen-des-Paluds in the Vaucluse is one of the youngest communes in the département and was officially founded on 5 June 1845. Originally it was just a small hamlet known as "Les Paluds de Monteux" (the marshes of Monteux), which belonged to the town of Monteux. The area was known for its damp soil but later grew into an independent village with its own identity.
The change of name and the founding of the independent commune are owed to Jean Althen, an Armenian agronomist who enriched the region in the 18th century with the cultivation of madder. This plant is used to make red dyes and brought economic prosperity to the area. In tribute to his work, the village was named after this pioneer.
Today Althen-des-Paluds keeps its rural charm with quiet streets, a friendly community and a central fountain dedicated to Jean Althen. The village is an ideal starting point for exploring the surrounding region.
