Vedène is a lively small town on the Sorgue, just east of Avignon. It has a clock tower built on an old town gate, a remarkable 18th-century church and a weekly market on Tuesdays.
Vedène is a small town of around 12,000 inhabitants in the plain just east of Avignon, in the Vaucluse. The Sorgue flows through the commune and splits into two arms here. The château looks down on the centre, and a chapel crowns the hill of Sainte-Anne. Stroll through the old centre to the Tour de l'Horloge: a square clock tower built in 1756 and 1757 on top of an old gate in the town walls, with an archway beneath it. The église Saint-Thomas, built between 1765 and 1767, has a Greek cross plan that is unique in France and is a protected monument. The old madder factory of Beauport is protected too: one of the last witnesses of the madder industry, which was of worldwide importance in the 19th century. The Wivisites audio guide leads you past fountains, ramparts and the Jardin des Hirondelles. On Tuesday mornings the market fills the place du Petit Pont. For concerts and theatre there is L'Autre Scène, partner of the Opéra Grand Avignon. Avignon and Châteauneuf-du-Pape are close by.
