Caromb is a small, charming village in the French region of Provence-Alpes-Côte d'Azur, in the Vaucluse département, looking out over Mont Ventoux. A handy location for anyone who wants to climb this giant of Provence.
Caromb's history goes back to Roman times, and the village's name is believed to come from "Carus Amor," meaning "Love for the King".
On a walk through Caromb you will notice several traces of the past: it has one of the largest Romanesque churches in the Vaucluse, the church of Saint-Maurice, built in the 14th century and listed as a historic monument in 1849. Do take a look inside at the Italian organ case from 1701, the masterpiece of the Grabuset triptych and the tomb of Etienne de Vaesc (died 1501).
Caromb has no fewer than 14 fountains, many dating from the 18th and 19th centuries, an interesting way to explore the old village.
A wonderful addition to Caromb's charm is the lake Lac du Paty, which offers peace and natural beauty in the middle of the Provençal landscape.
It has quiet picnic spots, fishing and walking paths in beautiful natural surroundings.
The market is held on Tuesday mornings.
Popular places to visit nearby are Le Barroux (3 km), Bédoin (3 km), Carpentras (7 km) and the Lac du Paty (the second oldest reservoir in France).
