Monieux is a small village at about 650 metres, on the south side of Mont Ventoux. In the Middle Ages it was built against the rock, below a watchtower and ramparts. This is where the Gorges de la Nesque begin, a deep canyon that starts at the lake of Monieux and ends at Méthamis. From the Castelleras viewpoint you look straight across at the sheer face of the Rocher du Cire. To explore the gorge on foot, a 9 kilometre loop leads past the 12th-century chapel of Saint-Michel. In the village you will find the church of Saint-Pierre, Romanesque in origin, and, in the town hall building, the small truffle museum of the Ventoux, where you learn about the black truffle and how it is hunted. By the lake you can fish and children have a playground, and from May to September a producers' market is held there on Sundays. Around the village, lavender fields colour the landscape. The Mur de la Peste, the old plague wall, is close by as well.
