Malaucène lies at the north-western foot of Mont Ventoux, with its bell tower, the fortified Saint-Michel church and the Groseau spring just outside the village.
Malaucène sits on the north-western side of Mont Ventoux and is a classic starting point for the climb to the summit. The bell tower, built between 1482 and 1532, rises above the village.
The Saint-Michel church, begun in the late 13th century, is a listed historic monument. It forms a corner of the old ramparts and still has defensive features, including a machicolated gallery above the door.
On the road to Mont Ventoux the Groseau spring emerges, the second largest karst spring in the Vaucluse after Fontaine-de-Vaucluse. The Romans carried its water to Vaison-la-Romaine by aqueduct. Nearby, the chapel of Notre-Dame du Groseau dates from the 12th and 13th centuries; Pope Clement V liked to stay here. Several walking routes start at the spring.
