Vaison-la-Romaine is one of the most characterful towns in the Vaucluse département, on the river Ouvèze and at the foot of the magnificent Dentelles de Montmirail. An impressive mountain range that is ideal for nature and long-distance walks.

With its mix of Roman ruins, a medieval centre and Provençal warmth, Vaison-la-Romaine is a unique destination where history and today's art of living come together.

🏛️ Highlights and sights

🔹 Roman archaeological sites: In the lower part of town you will find impressive ruins of temples, mosaics, villas and even an ancient theatre, one of the most impressive Roman sites in France.
🔹 The old Roman bridge: this bridge, more than 2,000 years old, links the old town with the medieval part and symbolises the rich history of Vaison-la-Romaine.
🔹 Medieval quarter: the town on top of the hill is dominated by a castle and narrow, atmospheric streets with panoramic views over the valley and the Dentelles.
🔹 Tuesday morning market: one of the largest and best-known Provençal markets, where you can taste and buy local produce, herbs, olive oil and artisan products.
🔹 Chapelle Saint-Quenin: a charming Romanesque chapel near the cathedral, a fine example of the town's religious history.

Location and day trips in the region

Thanks to its central location in Provence, Vaison-la-Romaine is an excellent base for lovely day trips:

🚗 Avignon: about 50 to 56 km / around 50 min by car, known for the Palace of the Popes and its UNESCO World Heritage centre.
🚗 Orange: about 30 km, an impressive Roman theatre and heritage.
🚗 Nyons: about 16 km, a medieval town with a well-known food heritage (olive oil and local markets).
🚗 Dentelles de Montmirail: right on the doorstep, perfect for walking, nature and views.

There are also more atmospheric Provençal villages in the area that are ideal for day trips, such as Crestet, Entrechaux, Séguret, Gigondas and Buisson, often with beautiful views and local wine estates to visit.
