Le Thor is a lively Provençal small town in the Vaucluse plain, between two arms of the Sorgue, about 5 km from L'Isle-sur-la-Sorgue and close to Avignon. It probably dates back to the 7th century. Its highlight is the église Notre-Dame-du-Lac, a Romanesque church from the late 12th century with a strikingly small bell tower, protected since 1840. It is open in the mornings from Monday to Saturday. Stroll on to the Porte de l'Horloge and the Porte Notre-Dame with its belfry. North of the town rises the hill of Thouzon, with the remains of a castle and priory and views of Mont Ventoux and the Luberon. At its foot lie the Grottes de Thouzon, discovered in 1902 during quarry work: the only natural cave in Provence fitted out for visitors, with yellow and golden stalactites. They are open from April to October. In July and August you can go canoeing on the Sorgue, and the market runs all year on Wednesday and Saturday mornings.
