Holiday homes in Sorgues

Sorgues lies where the Ouvèze meets the Rhône, between Avignon, Orange and Carpentras: a town with a papal past, a link to Braque and Picasso and plenty of green space by the water.

More about Sorgues

Sorgues lies where the Ouvèze flows into the Rhône, the same distance from Avignon, Orange and Carpentras. The town owes its name to a bridge: from 1063 it was called Pont-de-Sorgues. Between 1317 and 1324 Pope John XXII had a papal palace built here, sixteen years before the one in Avignon. A few remains can still be seen in the old centre. You can trace that history on the heritage trail, 4 kilometres and 14 stops, from the town hall to the municipal park. Along the way you pass the Romanesque church known as Saint-Sixte and the 18th-century Château Saint-Hubert, whose facade and roofs are protected. Art lovers will enjoy this too: Braque and Picasso stayed here in the summer of 1912, and it was in Sorgues that Braque made the first papier collé. On place Wettenberg, the Train fantôme monument recalls the war. Fancy some nature? On the île de l'Oiselay, a Natura 2000 site, you can follow a discovery trail, and a bike route of more than 30 kilometres starts there. The market is held every Sunday morning.
