Crestet is a medieval village on a rocky ridge near Vaison-la-Romaine, with steep lanes, castle ruins and views of Mont Ventoux and the Dentelles de Montmirail.
Crestet stretches along a narrow rocky ridge, about 5.5 km from Vaison-la-Romaine, which gives the village its name. It is part of the Mont Ventoux Regional Nature Park.
The castle, one of the oldest in the Comtat, dates back to the 9th century and was the residence of the bishops of Vaison. It is privately owned and not open to visitors.
On foot you climb steep cobbled lanes, vaulted passages and Renaissance façades. You pass the covered wash house, the partly rock-cut Saint-Sauveur church with its 16th-century octagonal fountain, and the Annonciade chapel from 1545. From the highest point the view takes in Mont Ventoux, the Dentelles de Montmirail and the Ouvèze plain.
